Sara J. Margolin, Ph.D.

I earned my Ph.D. in cognitive and sensory processes with a certificate in gerontology from the University of Florida in 2007, where I trained under a National Institute on Aging training program. Since then, I’ve worked at SUNY Brockport conducting research on cognition and aging, teaching classes in the psychology and neuroscience programs, and serving the university in many capacities, including as the director of the Master of Arts in psychology program.

My research interests include factors impacting language at both the word and sentence levels. My focus has been on both age-related changes and changes induced by our use of technologies. Additionally, my research has investigated the effects of misspellings on reading comprehension in young and older adults and the effects of negation on reading comprehension and metacomprehension (that’s our awareness of our own comprehension) in young adults and older adults.

My teaching interests are in cognitive processes, sensation and perception, research methods, and (of course) the psychology of aging.

In my spare time, I love to read, take photographs, play with my Newfoundland dogs (I‘ve got 4!), goof off with my husband and 2 children, and-when it’s warm-spend time glamping and hiking to waterfalls.
